I am a social and cultural historian of early modern Iberia and the Spanish world. My research and teaching areas include late medieval and early modern Europe, the Reformations, Golden Age Spain, the Iberian Atlantic world, women’s and gender history, and religious history. I previously taught at the US Naval Academy, and in 2019 I joined the history department at Penn State University.
My research and writing have been supported by grants from the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, a Mellon grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR-Mellon), the American Catholic Historical Association, and Washington University’s Center for the Humanities. My project would not have taken the form and depth that it has without this generous support, and I am grateful that such organizations exist and are determined to see work in the humanities flourish and proceed in creative and intellectually independent ways. I sincerely hope such funding will continue to be available to students in the upcoming years.
When I’m not writing and reading, I like to spend my time out of doors traveling, hiking, camping, and backpacking. I also love rock climbing and water sports and I used to play ice hockey, and I still enjoy skating when I have time.
