Having trouble keeping your nuns cloistered? The people of medieval Bermeo had it all figured out. In the fifteenth century, the bishop of Calahorra established a Fransciscan convent out on an island in the bay of this fishing village. Accessible only by boat, the nuns prayed for the safe return of the town’s mariners.
